NRL Finals live: South Sydney vs Manly at ANZ Stadium
South Sydney are red-hot favourites to continue Manly's ANZ Stadium hoodoo when they face off for a spot in the NRL final four on Friday night.
The Rabbitohs’ impressive first season under new coach Wayne Bennett is at risk of counting for nothing, however, if the Sea Eagles can spring an almighty upset – just as they did when they last met in a finals series at Sydney Olympic Park in 2013.
The September 27, 2013, ambush – 2184 days ago – was also the last time the Sea Eagles have tasted victory at the Olympic Stadium – turning the venue into a graveyard for the Sea Eagles ever since.
Manly has now lost nine straight games at ANZ Stadium and needs a textbook Des Hasler, backs-to-the-wall, performance to outmuscle the Bunnies, who are still stinging from their qualifying final loss to the Roosters in the opening week of the finals.
A mostly cloudy evening with a low of 16C and easing strong winds is forecast for when the battle kicks off at 7.50pm (AEST).
Rabbitohs lose patience with Sam
Sam Burgess is reportedly on the nose with South Sydney officials over his extraordinary claims against the NRL and the judiciary process.
Burgess vented his frustrations after missing last week’s NRL final against the Sydney Roosters because of a hair pull, likening the judiciary to a “kangaroo court”.
Burgess has been summoned to NRL headquarters for a “please explain” from CEO Todd Greenberg and threatened with a fine for his comments.
While Bunnies coach Wayne Bennett spoke out in support of Burgess, a report has since emerged that other senior staff at the Rabbitohs are losing patience with their line-stepping star.
Fairfax journalist Andrew Webster told Sky Sports Radio on Friday it was telling that Bennett was the only Bunnies figure to support Bennett's judiciary roast.
"I know internally there were plenty of people at Souths (who didn't support Bennett), you'll notice Bennett was the only one who came out and supported him.
"There were people at South Sydney, who weren't surprised the NRL came down hard.
"At some stage Sam has to look at his actions on the field, as he admitted earlier this year and as Bennett has said privately and publicly. Sam can take control of it, but he keeps saying, 'I'm not going to change' Well, he might have to."
But Bennett said more players should speak their mind like the Englishman. “He’s got something to say, he wants to be honest about it, he was,” Bennett said ahead of Friday’s semi-final against Manly.
“What do we want, do we want them all cliched and scripted?
“Because that’s what we’re getting at the moment, 80 per cent of the people that are interviewed are going down the party line.
“Sam’s always been different and that won’t change for him.” Greenberg on Wednesday said on face value Burgess’ comments breached the game’s code of conduct and were “offensive” to NRL judiciary chairman and Supreme Court Judge Geoff Bellew.
